Every year we compete at a variety of competitions of varying standard and seriousness.
Splash Night - Mid October
This gala is usually held within the first four weeks of the beginning of Semester 1. It is open for every member of the club to enter. The times swum do not define the squads or teams. It is an opportunity for new and old members to race each other and inexperienced swimmers to get a first experience at racing.
The gala is held at the Jubilee Sports Centre with 6 lane Omega Timing.
Oxford Gala - Late October
This is a great gala for all members of the club!
It is a very casual team competition in the same style as Arena League. We compete with other Universities at the Rosenblatt pool at Oxford University. After the competition, there is a fun night out in Oxford.
BUCS Short Course - Mid November
The first big competition of the year for SUSC!
BUCS Nationals are the largest University wide competitions for all sports and Short Course is the same. It is a 3 day competition; we travel up during the day on Friday, stay for 2 nights and return home on the Sunday. Thousands of swimmers enter will skills ranging from Olympians and Olympic hopefuls, to swimmers looking to experience something new. We take about 45 swimmers up to Sheffield every year for BUCS Short Course.
City of Southampton Opens
Every year we make an effort to attend at least one open meet as a club. This is usually the local Level 3 Open Meet hosted by the City of Southampton Swimming Club at the Quays Swimming Pool, Southampton.
BUCS Long Course - Mid February
The first competition after Christmas for SUSC. Similarly to BUCS Short Course, it is a huge competition with a range of swimming abilities. We take up to 30 swimmers to this competition in Sheffield with a very fun night out included.
Varsity - Easter Term
Varsity is the biggest competition for the University and Athletic Union as a whole. It is a competition with fierce rivalry against the University of Portsmouth; most sports societies compete. The location alternates each year between Southampton and Portsmouth (venue availability dependent). It is the real highlight of the year where SUSC have never lost in recent Varsity history. The Unviersity of Southampton have won the overall competition for two years running.
BUCS Team Championships - March
This competition is the most important for SUSC. It takes place on one weekend. The competition is divided into two conferences, A and B, and within each conference there are three divisions. Southampton have an A, B & C Team in each division. The top 4 teams at the end of the qualifying round in each division compete in the National final the following day.
In the national final, teams compete for the National division trophy. Southampton A placed 7th in the UK and 6th in England in the 2016 National finals! Even when pitted against teams such as Loughborough, Bath and Stirling.
After being relegated in 2017 (due to a change in how the competition was structured), in 2018 Southampton A came 3rd in Division 2 (Trophy) and were promoted to Division 1 (Championship)!
This takes place in Sheffield at Ponds Forge.
Alumni Gala - April
Hosted at the Jubilee Sports Centre on campus, the old members of the Swimming Club come back for one day and compete with the current members of the team.
A big night out follows after...
